Frequently Asked Questions
Do you completley remove the old fascia/soffit boards or do you cap over them with the new PVC-U boards?
Answer:
The existing fascia and soffit boards are completley removed. We never cap over existing boards. Most timber fascia and soffit boards will have some level of rot normally on the fascia boards just below the tiles, simply capping over the rotten boards will effectively 'box in' the problem. The rot will remain and worst of all you wont be able to see if it spreading. Any tradesman who reccomends capping over the fascia and soffit boards should be avoided.
I have noticed many properties have PVC-U soffit boards with vents or holes drilled into them. Why is this? Do you install these boards?
Answer:
A correctly installed PVC-U roofline system will leave the perimeter of your roof virtually airtight. It is essential that ventilation is installed at the eaves level (lowest point of the roof) to prevent loft condensation. PVC-U soffit boards with pre drilled holes are available but unfortunateley they do not look attractive and after a few years the holes are full of dirt and cobwebs. Daniel Weadley Roofing Services will install a plain non-vented soffit board however we will allow for ventilation by installing a 10mm ventilation strip which is fixed to the top edge of the fascia board, this will prevent loft condensation but once the guttering is installed it will be almost invisible as it is hidden behind the guttering.
I have timber fascia and soffit boards which are painted black can you install PVC-U boards in this colour?
Answer:
Yes. PVC-U fascia soffit and cladding boards come in a variety of colours including white, mahogany, rosewood, golden oak and black. With the exception of the white boards they all feature a woodgrain effect to mimic real timber. All colours are universal so they will match any PVC-U window frames you currently have in the chosen colour.
In your written quotation you have specified replacing the eaves felt. What is this? Why does it need replacing?
Answer:
Eaves felt refers to the lowest section of roofing felt just above the guttering. Eaves felt should overhang into the guttering by approx. 50mm, however as the guttering is often wet traditional roofing felt will rot and wear away. With every new installation of PVC-U products Daniel Weadley Roofing Services will replace this section of felt with a rigid PVC-U felt tray that will not rot. Once installed the eaves tray will prevent rainwater running behind the guttering and will also prevent the felt from sagging and potential 'ponding' of water on the felt.
My neighbour has PVC-U fascia and soffits, I noticed the boards have joints. Why is this?
Answer:
All fascia, soffit and cladding boards are manufactured in five metre lengths. This length is universal and applies to all product manufacturers. Where a longer length is required a joining strip/cover is used. All PVC-U fascia and soffit boards are subject to thermal expansion. At every joint a small gap is left to allow for this movement. Without this gap the boards could potentially buckle. A joining strip is used to cover this gap so it is not seen.
